Cheeracise: Twilight - Dance Fitness Aerobics Review

Cheeracise: Twilight - Dance Fitness AerobicsThe DVD is a good idea, but poorly executed. There is NO INSTRUCTION.The girls just start doing moves and expect you to catch on.The routines are technical and repeated. But forget about showing a move, then adding on.They just do it and expect repetition will teach you.Very frustrating.

But if you are looking for something different and don't need instruction, then buy this video. If you need instruction and a real workout, don't buy this.

I had high hopes for this DVD.It did not live up to my expectations.

Pliates: The Elastic Band Series 1 (Full Col) Review

Pliates: The Elastic Band Series 1I have the privilege of living in Ithaca and taking classes with Zipi twice a week, and they are great! She has a devoted following, and everyone has positive success stories. I have already lost weight and feel much better than when I began her classes. I purchased the DVD's to use when I travel and when the weather is too bad in upstate NY to attend her classes, and have found them to be as comprehensive as her in-person instruction. This DVD requires nothing more than a little space and an elastic band that can be easily purchased online or at a local sporting goods store. I highly recommend Zipi's positive method and thorough instruction!

Sweating in the Spirit - 3 in 1 Gospel Review

Sweating in the Spirit - 3 in 1 GospelI had so much fun doing this workout that I forgot I was working out! Sweating in the Spirit includes 3 workouts - 30 min Gospel Aerobics, 10 min Strengthing the Spirit, and 10 min Spirit Stretch - which you can do separately or together. The class is made up of exercisers of all different shapes and sizes. You work out to gospel music, including live performances by Kirk Franklin, Shirley Murdock, and Yolanda Adams. The class is very vocal and enthusiastic, but NOT so much that it gets annoying.

As an instructor, Donna Richardson is very encouraging. She reminds you how important it is to "take care of your temple." She tells you to just have fun and not worry how you look. She makes you feel like you're just dancing with friends, not working out.

The aerobics section is dance-based but the moves aren't too complicated - I didn't get them all at first but I eventually picked them up. The strength section is pilates-based and does not use weights, although you may want to use a mat if you don't have a carpeted floor. In the stretch section, Yolanda Adams sings live and Donna doesn't want to talk over her to cue the moves. She kind of whispers the cues but you basically just have to follow along.

Overall this workout is lots of fun! It's great for beginners and not at all intimidating. I consider myself to be an intermediate exerciser and it still got my heart pumping. For advanced exercisers this would be better for when you want a "light" day.

Power Zone: Mind, Body, Soul (2003) Review

Power Zone: Mind, Body, SoulDenise Austin's Mind Body Soul is a 40-minute workout which nicely blends different exercise styles. It is filmed on an outdoors-y looking set, and Denise works out with two background exercisers. The first section, Mind, begins with a 5-minute warm-up which concentrates on breathing and spine stretches and then moves into an additional 5-minutes of standing yoga postures. The poses (warrior II, side angle, triangle) flow nicely and include some more challenging balances such as warrior III and dancer.Denise gives good reminders to focus on your breathing, although she overuses trite phrases such as "your spine is your life line."

The middle segment, Body, consists of Pilates movements performed mostly in a standing position. In the first 10 minutes, you will replicate Pilates matwork moves such as single leg stretch, criss-cross, double leg stretch, spine stretch, and saw, all while standing erect. However, you will also perform some challenging plank work from a push-up position on the floor. The following 10 minutes require the assistance of a wall.Initially, the wall is used for support during 1-legged moves such as leg kicks, leg circles, rear kicks, and heel beats.Next, the wall is used for some strength moves, including a wall squat, a triceps isometric exercise, and wall push-ups.Throughout this section, Denise repeatedly reminds you to "zip up" your abdominal area so that you really feel the work in your midsection.

The final section of this video, Soul, was a 10-minute dance-type stretch. The exercises performed included mambos, lunges, and additional warrior poses, but the moves seemed to serve as more of a cool-down function rather than cardio or toning. This was my least favorite section of the video; it may have worked better if the Mind and Soul segments had been reversed.Overall, however, I found this to be an enjoyable workout for light toning and general stretching.Denise's personality is a bit more subdued than usual here, and because the workout moves slowly, I found her much easier to follow than in her aerobic workouts.

Kathy Smith: Tummy Trimmers Review

Kathy Smith: Tummy Trimmers"Tummy Trimmers", despite its horrid name, is a great little DVD. It contains five different 10-minute ab workouts which you can program to play in any order.

Standing Abs: I was a bit disappointed with this workout, as it is far less intense than other standing ab routines like Billy Blanks TaeBo Abs! Tae Bo or the "Core" section of Quickfix - Total Cardio Kick. However, it is designed as a warmup to the other routines, rather than a stand-alone workout, and in this respect it fits the bill. You could also use it as a warmup to other DVDs. After a quick warmup, Kathy moves into a series of twisting knee lifts, overhead stretches, side-to-side chops, and some standing balance work.

Core Abs: This section will be a favourite among the crunch-phobic. It combines a series of toe taps, planks with variations, back extensions, boat and half-boat poses and side planks with hip pulses.

Boot Camp Abs: This aptly-named workout includes a variety of crunches, including crunches while twisting your legs over to one side (I really felt this in my obliques), pulsed crunches, V-sits, and bicycles. The workout finishes with a quick cobra stretch.

Stability Ball Workout: After a warmup consisting of reaches and twists while straddling the ball, Kathy moves into a long series of crunches on the ball. This is followed by woodchops (you could add a light medicine ball to this bit), back extensions on the ball, roll-outs, leg lifts with your pelvis on the ball, tucks, and side crunches with one hip on the ball.

Pilates Mat Abs: This is a short yet effective series of roll-ups, single and double leg stretches, and bridges. Kathy continually keeps you focused on perfect form.

There's nothing new or innovative here - just a series of well-designed, effective routines which work all sections of your abs without a wasted moment. Throughout the DVD, Kathy says that, while everyone wants a six-pack, it's important to have a strong midsection to help us perform everyday activities. During the workouts, she often points out the muscles you are using on the background exercisers, and demonstrates easier and more advanced variations. And of course, she looks fantastic!

If you enjoy the format of this DVD, you'll like Star Trainers: Abs which also offers five 10-minute ab routines, from five different instructors.

Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - 3 Mile Slim & Sleek Walk Plus Pilates Review

Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - 3 Mile Slim and Sleek Walk Plus PilatesI have to say that this is her Best DVD release to date! Leslie has had many releases in 2009 and I was a person that complained about a few of them. I was rarely a fan of the "Leslie-Only" DVDs as I felt that some had poor production quality and/or felt very rushed especially with cooldowns and stretches. After seeing many ppl's complaints both on her site and throughout the web, Leslie has listened to her fan base and produced IMO one of the best, if not the best, DVD of her career! Let me assure everyone that I am not employed for her nor do I benefit in anyway by giving her fav reviews...I've noticed many of her "reviewers" are in fact employees (which you would know if you are or were a member of her site). I was positive that I would not buy anymore of her DVDs and this one makes me a renewed Leslie Fan!! I tried this for the first time today and was blown away!

The DVD has several "chapters" to it. An Introduction, 1, 2, & 3 Mile Chapters, and the Final chapter is the full length pilates routine done on the floor. She also offers a Music-Only option for anyone who may find this a "plus" when ordering. I personally have to listen to her, she's very motivating and positive. I decided to listen to the intro, something I rarely do and found it informative and helpful. She gives the background info of how Pilates came to be and some factoids for ppl who are interested.

As far as the meat of the workout; it's really quite new and different! There are several new moves and WOW was it great! You have side steps that evolve into sidetaps with knee lifts. There is boosted walking with boosted side steps (lack of a better word/description). She focuses on really engaging the muscle here and it's a main focus. There are arm circles which are done slow and control along with other arm movements. When you follow her instruction with the control, you are sweating! You can feel the core and arms really working all while walking. In the 3rd mile she does some standing leg/pilates work like leg circles and redoes some of the new moves. Her transitions are nice and not jumpy; I saw that 1 person complained about it on another site. If you are a beginner or fairly new to her, this DVD may not be the best choice to start with; she moves quickly, but never jumpy. She does walking in between all of the new moves and gives a countdown. If you are familiar with any of the leading that Mary Kay has done in some of the workouts, she reminds me of MK at times; she's taken to pointing to the direction in which she travels. Although, she doesn't do that throughout, but enough so that the new moves don't catch you off guard.

Music...ah yes, there are some new tunes! I would say overall, the DVD's music has a jazzy-type feel to it. The warmup song and 2-3 others are new; the rest are reused. The warmup I felt very relaxed and energized simply from the music. The style selection truly fits the DVD's tone and purpose. The beat of the music would put this DVD at an intermediate pace. Advanced exercisers or Leslie Walkers would get a great moderate workout and beginners would find a challenge. The workout flew by!

Fast forward to the end of the DVD; something also new here. First let me say we have a "classic Leslie" moment. We get through our cool down, she says her thanks and she walks off the set. Within seconds she's running back in laughing bc she forgot the stretch! I found this to put a smile on my face and had no issues with it whatsoever. She's human and has an error. Could this have been edited, I'm sure, but that's one of those things that fans of her's tend to like; she feels more Huamn that way. She does the stretch, longer in this one compaired to several newer workouts too! Nice! What's new here is that she gives a healthy snack idea of Apples and includes a recipe insert within the DVD. She's interacting with the staff and giving everyone apples telling them the benefits of healthy snacks and some ideas for such. Perhaps not a huge deal for some, but I thought it was great. Just another way to see her interact with ppl and I stood there sweaty, smiling the whole time; I found everything on this DVD very motivating from the Introduction to the Mat work.

Now, the Mat Work. The Mat work she does 5 or 6 different Pilates exercises, all but one on the back; "swimming" is done on the stomach and is done last, if memory serves right. She does about a 5 minute demonstration that includes all of the movements. She gives you just enough time to feel what each one is and what it looks like and is off to the next exercise. After all of the movements have been shown, she puts a routine together for you. You do your movements with "bridges" being your in between exercise just the like walking is in the main workout. Each exercise gets about 2-3 sets. Some sets are longer than others and no count is given. What you are doing here is really focusing on the powerhouse muscles, trying to keep them and the back stabilized, all while building up to the full count. I have never done Pilates before and have often wanted to try, but I don't want to either do 30-60 minutes or I find the instructors to not be my type. She gives you the best of the best for working the core and nothing more. Anyone with a large background in Pilates may be dissapointed. No breathing techniques to be had here and no advanced movements. Although she does show how to make them more advanced as you get stronger. She informs the viewer that she does have a Pilates Cert, but to seek out a true Pilates Professional for the best Pilates workouts. I think that's pretty fair. I was feeling my abs burning during this segment and I could not complete all of the sets. If I do this 2-3 times per week as advised, I know I will see improved strength and posture within my core. It's great for the Pilates Newbie or someone looking to get a quicker segment in without commitment. You can access the Pilates Routine via the main menu without having to do the full routine.

I got up and felt very worked out, sweaty, and at peace. I rarely smile while working out although I do enjoy it. This was one DVD and one workout that I caught myself smiling throughout the DVD Intro to Finish. I don't have a single complaint with this DVD and only hope that she continues to put out amazing workouts like this. If that happens then I personally will take back my complaints about no longer having the group of walkers with her; it was just that good! No walkers were needed to make it any better. In fact, in this walk I think they would have been distracting. It's more than the 4 basics here and I wouldn't want to watch ppl trip over themselves; it would take away from the peaceful feel the workout had. She does't use the black background here so it's brighter and you can see ppl and cars in the background. I actually enjoy that as it gives me something different to look at; call me crazy. You can see a camera come into the picture but it's like an nano-second. They quickly switch to a different view. Only 1 camera jiggling episode to be had, just after the warmup. Only bothers me as it makes me dizzy for some reason. But, it's only once, unlike some of the others that I think did this for an "art-sy" effect. If I someone who had sworn off my FAVORITE INSTRUCTOR due to several complaints from other workouts can swallow my own foot and enjoy the gem that this DVD is, anyone can! Leslie is back and ready for action! She looks fabulous, does a fabulous job, and really feels personable here. If I could have hugged her this morning after my workout, I would have! Now I have a choice for Leslie's Workouts: The 4 Basics or the Jazzed up workout with more flare! She's my favorite and it's nice to not have to use other instructors now for new moves. I love it!

6 hours post workout and my abs are quite sore!

Crunch - Burn & Firm Pilates Review

Crunch - Burn and Firm PilatesThis is Ellen Barrett's third Crunch Pilates video and the first which incorporates weights into the workout.Similar to in her previous video, Crunch Fat-Burning Pilates, many of the traditional Pilates floor exercises are performed here in a standing position, although Burn & Firm Pilates does include a separate matwork section (see below). The workout begins with a 5-minute warm-up consisting of simple movements such as marches and plies (there are A LOT of plies in this video!).Following this, there was a 7-minute segment that is difficult for me to define; it was too slow-moving to be cardio and might best be described as light toning. In this section, there are additional plies plus some basic ballet-inspired leg movements.

Next comes the "meat" of the workout, a 24-minute cardio segment using light weights to increase the workload. The first series includes alternating side leg lifts (the "saw") with a "swan" movement that involves raising one arm overhead and lifting the opposite leg.Although Ellen stated that we should be feeling this in our inner thighs, I found that it was actually my OUTER thighs and hips that were burning! Next comes more plies interspersed with two moves from the Pilates side series, rond de jambe and leg circles, both performed in a standing position.Continuing on, there is a segment involving knee lifts which turn into lunges and combine with a front arm raise. After that, it's back to MORE plies! This time, a standing Pilates arm zip is performed in-between sets. The finally cardio segment provides even more work for the arms:you will do a front and side mambo that turns into a front and side lunge (a bit awkward to the side) while performing bicep curls the entire time. The cardio section ends with a few additional exercises for the arms such as circles.Overall, I found the intensity of the cardio to be about the same as for the cardio segment of Crunch Fat-Burning Pilates, although this would not have been the case without using the weights.

The final 8 minutes of the video are performed on the floor, starting with arms and abs work in a seated position with the weights.Next, you move on to your back for two additional exercises, knee drops and leg straddles, using the weights as anchors. Finally, there are just two traditional Pilates matwork exercises, the single leg stretch and the single straight leg.The workout ends with a very short (1-2 minutes) cool-down in a seated position for a total of approximately 44 minutes.

I enjoyed this video and liked the addition of the weights, especially since I have been trying to add light weights to many of my cardio routines. What I did NOT like was the absence of a traditional Pilates matwork sequence; I would have much preferred to leave out the light toning segment early in the video and devote this time to mat exercises instead.Although the exercises are a bit more repetitious here, most fans of Crunch Fat Burning Pilates will probably enjoy this video as well.
