Caribbean Workout: Core Pilates (2005) Review

Caribbean Workout: Core PilatesI recently picked up this program after really enjoying the previous Caribbean Pilates/Pilates Plus DVD's (which I've already reviewed on Amazon).

This set contains three twenty-two minute self contained workouts that were formerly on the Caribbean Workout Show. Being from a TV show there are commercial breaks which fade in and out, sometimes more smoothly than others. Still, in spite of a few rough spots in that regard, these programs are really some of my favorite Pilates based programs along w/ the Caribbean Pilates and Pilates Plus.

Their length makes them easy to fit in, the price is super low and you get a lot of workouts for that low price.

The first workout has a abs/back focus and it's very well sequenced. Jennifer Tilley, who leads the workouts w/ Shelley Mcdonald as the "student", alternates between Abs exercises and Back extension exercises. Jennifer Tilley has an interesting approach to varying the "classical" Pilates exercises as well as the way she sequences them. For me it works very well and keeps things fresh.

The second segment is a mix of Yoga type poses and Pilates exercises. It starts standing and then moves down to the mat. There's a nice mix of Ab core and back extension exercises as well a mini Sun Salute where you go from cobra into child's pose (she refers to these as up dog and down dog, but they are actually cobra and child's pose).

This segment is very much a blend of Yoga and Pilates, more so than any of the other Caribbean workouts that I have.

The third segment is primarily focused on the lower body and features a fairly extensive side lying series.

It starts w/ the hundred to warm up and then moves into the side lying position.

The one thing that I wanted to point out is that Jen Tilley first does 4 or so exercises on the right side, then switches to the left side and does the same exercises. BUT then what happens is that she continues on the left side and starting with the Développé on does a whole bunch more exercises and ends w/ small leg circles.

At that point after some gentle hip stretches, then she goes to the other side, starts with the Développé and then completes the leg series on the right side. The thing I don't like about this is that even though the same exercises are eventually done on both sides they are not done in a symmetrical order which means the left side is really maxed out by doing them all in a row while the right side gets to rest and then complete the series after the left side is done.

Fortunately, if one is aware of this and wants to make it symmetrical, what you can do is, switch back to the right side when she starts the Développé and then switch back to the left side when she does the Développé on the right side. In spite of that workable imperfection, this is an enjoyable and fun DVD to work with that definitely works the areas intended. I gave it five stars in spite of the few imperfections because overall I think it delivers what it promises and does so at a ridiculously low price!

I enjoy the personalities of the two teachers, the spontaneity of the way they interact and the scenery as always is beautiful. There is always nice gentle music during the Pilates sessions which enhances the overall atmosphere of the sessions.

If you are looking for a more "classical" Pilates approach I would highly recommend Hilary Burnett's Intermediate program. If you've never done Pilates before I would recommend Stott Basics program for excellent detailed instruction. I have heard great things about the Hilary Burnett Beginner program but unfortunately don't have that one.

Ana Caban has some nice beginning and intermediate programs as well which are based more on Joseph Pilates approach.

Dealing with Acute Low Back Pain Review

Dealing with Acute Low Back PainThis DVD is good for someone who has never exercised in their life. It has some very good tips but again for someone who has never exercised. If you have been to physical therapy even once then you have covered all that is in this DVD. I was disappointed that there wasn't more information for the price. They have a nice explanation of the exercises.

Product Description:
Dealing With Acute Low Back Pain DVD was developed by Physical Therapist, Harry Benich, to enhance the progress and effectiveness of a physical therapy program for patients with Acute Low Back Injuries. Due to shrinking reimbursement by health insurances, physical therapists are very limited in the time they have with patients and often the treatment programs cannot be completed, restoring patients to full pre-injury status. Principles and basic skills are taught for most patients with spine or lumbo-pelvic injuries to prevent further injury and allow healing to occur as rapidly as possible.Included is a home-based circuit-style exercise program for restoring and building strength.

Shape Up With Sharon - Yoga/Pilates (2008) Review

Shape Up With Sharon - Yoga/PilatesAs I have been practicing yoga nearly 3 years pretty regularly, both with and without studio influence on my practice, I have had the opportunity to study a little pilates with a now-great teacher. This DVD does NOT fuse the two disciplines into a kind of Yog-a-lates; but that is necessary in this case. Sharon (with the help of her class) is an excellent and mindful yogini who knows a lot of asana, at least; but the pilates segment is where she really is in her element. Traditional mat pilates that really delivers, and makes me miss my old pilates class. Y-ouch!

Jennifer Kries: Hot Body Cool Mind - Level 1 (2006) Review

Jennifer Kries: Hot Body Cool Mind - Level 1This is a new video by Jennifer Kries, a ballet-trained fitness instructor who is well-known for her The Method Pilates videos. Here, Jennifer takes some elements of her past workouts--ie, combining Pilates and dance--and adds a new element, the concept of Yin (cool) and Yang (hot). Thus, the workout segments on this DVD are designed mainly to relax, energize, or both. There are a total of 7 different workout styles, each of which are Yin or Yang; Jennifer has combined these into 7 premixes, or you can choose to mix and match on your own, which is what I did.

Here is the main menu for the DVD:
*Welcome to Hot Body Cool Mind
*Full Life Force Workout
*Life Force Workout Segments
*Hot Body Cool Mind Workout Combinations
*The Yin Yoga and Meridian Theory Interview
*Credits
*About Jennifer

As I mentioned, I didn't try any of the premixed workout combinations, as most were a bit too lengthy for me (2 of the 7 were 30-40 minutes, the remainder were 55 minutes and more, up to 91 minutes). When you select the option for the individual segments, the breakdown is as follows (note: the times are all as given on the DVD insert, and the 5 segments labeled "on the go" are less than 20 minutes each):

*Waking Energy Introduction
*Waking Energy "Before You Begin"
*Waking Energy Sitting (17 minutes)-on the go
*Waking Energy Standing (13 minutes)-on the go
*The 5 Tibetans Introduction
*The 5 Tibetans (9 minutes)-on the go
*Pilates with Introduction (34 minutes)
*Pilates without Introduction
*Yoga Intro
*Yoga (22 minutes)
*Ballet (18 minutes)-on the go
*Jazz (14 minutes)-on the go
*Yin Yoga and Meditation (21 minutes)

Okay, now I will provide my impressions of each of the above:

Waking Energy Sitting. This was a unique seated warm-up based largely on Chi-Gong.Jennifer focuses on awakening chi, or life-force, from rubbing the hands together to actually slapping and punching the body (she provides detailed instruction on this both during the DVD and in the accompanying booklet to insure that it is pleasant).Self-massage is also performed, and Jennifer says that this segment is intended to provide spinal mobilization.Overall, I found it to be pleasant, but that's about it.

Waking Energy Standing. This segment is also based on Chi-Gong as well as Makko-Ho (active meridian stretch).Performed standing, I found it to be more energizing and stretching than the seated version.I think this segment would make a nice wake-up to start the day.

The 5 Tibetans. These 5 exercises are known as the "Rites of Rejuvenation;" they are practiced by Tibetan Monks and are supposed to stimulate the chakra system to provide age-defying benefits. Some of the moves are recognizable from yoga, such as camel pose and down dog, but all are performed in a series of flowing repetitions with breath. The goal is to work up to 21 repetitions, but Jennifer does only 7 of each here.Despite my prior experience with both yoga and the 5 Tibetans themselves, I found it a bit difficult to keep up with Jennifer's fast pace, although she does instruct you to relax with two full breaths between each exercise set.

Pilates. This segment starts with an overview with basic Pilates principles such as breathing and form. This is a must if you are new to Pilates, but if (like me) you have prior Pilates experience, you can go directly to the version without the introduction (about 28 minutes).Jennifer leads a fairly standard mat practice which mostly follows classical Pilates sequencing, although she adds some stretches, decreases the repetitions, shows modifications, and performs only 3 of the series of 5.This is definitely a beginning-level Pilates workout, although I found there to be some good form reminders included.

Yoga.Again, this is a pretty standard vinyasa flow yoga practice.Jennifer begins with sun breaths and then goes into two rounds each of sun salutation A and B.Standing postures include warrior 2, triangle, tree, and wide-legged standing forward bend; seated poses are supine boat, child, table, seated forward bend, and sage twist. The practice finishes with a final down dog and forward bend before rolling up to standing (there is no final relaxation).Although not ideal for someone with no prior yoga experience, this segment would probably be doable after reviewing both the introduction and the practice before attempting them.

Jazz and Ballet.I'm reviewing these two segments together because I found them to be similar as well as my least-favorite aspects of the DVD.Although these two dance styles are intended to provide some cardio, I found both to be too slow-moving to significantly raise my heart rate.I also found it very difficult to follow Jennifer's cueing in both sections:she does not mirror-cue, so it's very easy to get confused left vs. right, and in both workouts, she uses many different ballet terms without explaining ahead of time exactly what these exercises involve. As a result, I needed to watch my television constantly during both segments and had to try very hard to match what Jennifer was doing as closely as possible. She also puts together little combinations; these were a bit easier to follow in the Ballet workout, as in the Jazz workout, you do not even know that you are doing a combination until Jennifer tells you to go back to the beginning. Those who enjoyed Jennifer's dance instruction in her prior The Method series might like these segments, but they didn't click with me at all (and I do generally enjoy dance workouts).

Yin Yoga and Meditation. This is much different from the previous yoga segment:the concept behind yin yoga is to perform just a few yoga poses held for very long periods, up to 15 minutes or more.Jennifer calls this the "un-workout" and talks about how each posture is designed to stretch the meridians of the body (for more on this, you can check out the "Theory Intergration" segment from the main menu, where Jennifer interviews a shiatsu practitioner).Jennifer does NOT hold the postures for the recommended length in this segment; instead, she encourages you to hold the poses longer on your own or to complete approximately 10 breaths here. The postures are performed entirely on the floor and include cobbler's pose, seated forward bend, child's pose (Jennifer recommends performing this between all of the postures but only shows it the one time), wide-leg seated forward bend, thread the needle, reclined twist (aka revolved stomach pose), savasana (relaxation), and final meditation.

In summary, this is generally a very well-done DVD with a variety of practice options.Although the DVD case suggests that the workout is appropriate for all levels, as a high intermediate, I felt that most of the segments were to easy for me.However, a beginner will certainly appreciate the more detailed instruction (in many of the segments, Jennifer talks quite a bit between exercises) and will most likely enjoy the slower pace of the waking energy and dance segments.I think this DVD would be best suited to an advanced beginning exerciser who is interested in trying some of the unique styles presented here.

One final note:according to Jennifer's reps, this Level 1 DVD is subtitled "Embark on the Journey" (Jennifer sometimes uses this name during the workouts, but the name does not appear anywhere on the DVD case). There are two follow-up DVDs planned for release later this year, Level 2, "Harness the Power," and Level 3, "The Life Force Power Workout."The other video that is currently on the market, "Waking Energy" is a stand-alone DVD from this series which includes instruction on "Pilates Toys."

Yoga Starter Bundle (Amazon.com Exclusive) Review

Yoga Starter BundleThis is a wonderful combination of DVDs if you want to learn yoga and/or just improve your positions. I'm so glad I got it, it's the cost of about 2 classes but gives you 4 DVDs to practice with.

The 10-minute yoga has 5 separate 10-minute segments, so you can do one a day or all 5 at once if you've got the time. The DVD has Yoga Basics, Yoga for Buns & Thighs, Yoga for Abs, and Yoga for Flexibility & Relaxation. I love when I don't have much time and can do 10 minutes. Seriously, 10-minutes is better than nothing.

There are two 'Crunch' DVDs, one is candlelight yoga and the other is a Pilates/Yoga mix, both are good. If you have time at the end of your day, the candlelight DVD is a good way to work out the days' stress. It's nice if you light some safe candles too.

The Yoga for Dummies is a solid intro into yoga. Despite the title, it's geared towards thinking people. It's a good DVD, and is paced well.

I really like this set. It's given me a boost to keeping up my yoga regimen at home.

Peak Performance Yoga (aka Yoga For Longevity) (Peak Performance Yoga) (2002) Review

Peak Performance YogaI bought this video after reading various reviews about it both in Yoga Journal and on Amazon as well.
For the sake of background, I've been a dedicated daily yoga practitioner for over 5 years and have over 40 videos (along with weekly lessons with a wonderful teacher) and was curious to see Rod Stryker's approach to yoga. I've read several articles by him and and about his deep background in Yoga. I'm really pleased with what he presents in this video.
This video is unique in many ways. First, Rod Stryker moves at a much more relaxed pace than many videos which makes it much easier to follow. For most (if not all) of the poses he starts with preparatory movements that move you gently into and out of each pose before you hold them for an extended time. This really lets your body "warm" into the pose and acclimate to the movement before holding it. This is a really beautiful part of the approach taken here (many of Yoga Zone's videos do this to a certain extent as well and I wouldn't be surprised if that's a result of Mani and Alan Finger's influence on him (Alan Finger is the founder of Yoga Zone and Mani was his Father).
Anyway, this is a very thorough, well executed session that has lots of attention to the internal aspects of yoga practice. It also contains a long relaxation segment which then moves into a seated meditation segment.
Also, you can do either the first 30 minutes of the tape and stop if you are short on time or you can continue on for the full hour to be able to get into a deeper, more thorough practice.
I highly recommend this video to those looking for a gentle but very thorough Yoga practice. I don't know if you'll end up living longer but you'll sure feel better each day of the life that you do have.
Namaste.

Yoga for Back Care Review

Yoga for Back CareNOTE:This same yoga practice, now being release by Gaiam, was previously released by Living Arts.It has also been released under the title "Back Care Yoga," but it is NOT the same practice as "Back Care Yoga for Beginners."

Excellent yoga instructor Rodney Yee offers this 3-part workout focused on strengthening back muscles in order to maintain a healthy back. He utilizes various props (blanket, bolster, chair, brick, strap) to make the poses more gentle and accessible to those at all levels of fitness (however, absolute beginners should probably stick with his other practice, Back Care Yoga for Beginners).

The first 16-minute section concentrates on simple stretches to warm up the back muscles. Poses are done either while lying on the floor or in a seated position, and Rodney uses a blanket to increase range of motion. The second segment is a bit longer (around 18 minutes) and places greater emphasis on strength moves. It begins with basic backbends (eg, cat pose) and moves on to standing poses modified by use of a chair; the segment ends with a series of lying stretches. In the final section, Rodney uses a wider variety of props, including TWO chairs and both the blanket AND the bolster. This is a slow-moving, approximately 16-minute segment which focuses on fostering relaxation through practicing a small number of postures held for a longer period of time.

At times, Rodney's reliance on props is a bit distracting, particularly while you are trying to relax during the final section. However, he always allows ample time to relocate the props in-between poses, and his use of the props is definitely beneficial, particularly during the second practice. Rodney's manner is extremely calm and relaxing, and his voiceover is always perfectly in sync with his on-screen performance. One minor criticism is that he doesn't offer mirrored instruction, but this is easily ignored given his otherwise excellent cueing. Overall, this is a very good series of yoga practices by a master yoga instructor.
