Stability Ball Workout for Dummies (2003) Review

Stability Ball Workout for DummiesThis is a must have for part of any workout routine. The DVD starts off with bascis such as choosing the right ball size, proper form etc. The workout consists of 15 workouts that challenge every muscle in your body especially your core. It's best to watch it first before doing it so that you can become familiar with the routine but the workouts are very easy to follow and the instructor (Liz) gives clear, detailed instructions. Liz takes you through 2 sets of each exercise so you will definitely feel the burn but most important is to make sure that you select the right ball size and that it is inflated properly because at first mine would sink in a bit when I sat on it but I looked at the instructor's ball and noticed how hers looked when she sat on it.One should never worry about bursting the ball when they sit on it because it can withstand over 300 lbs. (but once again inflate it properly) A set of hand weights are needed for a portion of the workout (for arm & chest exercises) along with a yoga mat to place your ball on. Do give this DVD a try though because it is worth it!

Release Workout (2009) Review

Release WorkoutI couldn't wait to try this video after using and loving Suzanne's other 3 DVDs.I hadn't tried anything by Leah yet, but she seemed just as great as Suzanne in this selection.

First things first, the video is about 50 minutes long.It includes standing work, floor work, and stretching with relaxation. If you do the whole video, you will get a full body workout. You don't need any equipment for this video (a huge plus!)Maybe a mat, if you want one, but you could do the exercise on carpet too and you don't even need that much space.

This video is good for beginners and advanced exercisers alike.Suzanne is pregnant in the program, so she demonstrates the modifications, which should be easy enough for anyone to follow if they are not up for following Leah who demonstrates much more challenging moves at times.I am in great shape.I work out 7 days a week for at least an hour a day. I weigh between 110-115.Doing everything in advanced mode is still very difficult for me at times (especially the plank series - I have to drop down to my knees for a few seconds usually). The only part I wasn't really that impressed with was the abs section.First of all, it seems too brief and second of all, it's all performed on your back - shoulders off the ground. This always causes me a lot of neck strain. Also, my abs are pretty developed, so I didn't feel this was much of a challenge (even going with the advanced choices).I guess from Suzanne and Leah, I was just expecting a little more creative ab exercises. This is my only gripe about the video! The rest is truly an amazing workout. The music, as others have mentioned, is beautiful and soothing. There is an option on the video to turn off Leah's voice over and just workout to music.I think this would be cool after you have learned all the instruction.

The stretching portion is very good. For some reason, it seems to make my body feel better than most other stretches I've done on different videos.Maybe it's just the music, but it's a nice relieving feeling. There is a nice addition at the end of the video - 10 minutes of the music for relaxation time.I admit, it's hard to just lay there and not do anything. If you're like me and your brain is hard to turn off and you're thinking of a million things you need to do, it's literally tough to make yourself just lay there, but force yourself because it is very peaceful if you can... even if you don't do it for the whole 10 minutes.

One last thing to add... Leah and Suzanne mention it at the beginning of the video, but this is more of a toning and muscle tension release workout. If you want the best results, you need to do some cardio on top of this video. While you will be burning calories doing this, it's really not a cardio workout.Leah and Suzanne reccommend doing Release about 3 to 4 times a week.I've been combining this with some Taebo and Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. It works very well.It may sound strange, but I like to do Release at about 8 o'clock at night before I go to bed because it relaxes my muscles.Good luck to all!Go Suzanne and Leah!I can't wait for more videos!

Quick Fix - Pilates ABS Workout Review

Quick Fix - Pilates ABS WorkoutQuick Fix Pilates Abs is an excellent exercise video for targeting not only your abdominal area, but also your entire midsection, or "core."The tape consists of three 10-minute ab programs which become progressively more difficult.Instructor Keli Roberts jumps right into the workout, offering good form pointers but not much detailed instruction. Therefore, prior familiarity with Pilates is a must for this workout, especially given that there are several challenging, intermediate/advanced level Pilates moves included (some modifications are shown).
Program 1 contains a classic Pilates matwork sequence, although the exercises are not performed in the traditional order.Keli alternates more accessible, beginner's level Pilates moves such as leg circles and the hundred with more challenging moves such as the shoulder bridge, the rollover, and modified teasers. In Program 2, there is a greater focus on obliques, beginning with the can-can and then moving through most of the exercises in the Pilates "stomach series," including single and double leg stretch, scissors, and criss-cross.This program also includes moves to work your back such as swimming and back extensions. The third program is the toughest by far, and it includes some quite challenging moves. This section begins with two sets of push-up and then continues with plank work both from a push-up position and from an elbows down position. This is also the only section which includes exercises from the Pilates side kicks series; these exercises really work not only your abdominals, but also your outer thigh/hip area.
It's important to note that there are no warmups/cool-downs included in this workout:each program is a full 10 minutes of intense toning work. This would be a very good video for anyone who enjoys Pilates and wants to some very different, concentrated Pilates routines.

Pilates Weight Loss Workout for Dummies Review

Pilates Weight Loss Workout for DummiesI have been interested in trying Pilates for a while, and I had wanted to try the Winsor Pilates, but didn't want to spend the $40 bucks unless I was sure I was going to stick with it and like it.So, Pilates Weight-loss for Dummies was at Target for 6.99 so I snatched it up, to give it a try.I was really pleasantly surpised!! In fact, I love it!! I was able to fairly easily follow along with the instructor, and she does everything slow enough that you can follow along well, also she explains each exercise very well, so you know what's coming next!! My abs were pretty sore the next day after only one workout. And pain is good when your trying to get your muscles in shape!! I found the whole work-out challenging, but strangely relaxing at the same time, and very calming!! I love the instructor's calm demeanor and positive style. It's a great stress reducer!! I think I'm going to be hooked on Pilates. Oh, and I did go ahead and buy the Winsor Pilates a few days later, as well, and will probably use all the dvds/videos interchangeably.Winsor Pilates is strictly floor/mat work, but the Pilates for Dummies also has standing Pilates, which I really enjoyed!! Thanks for reading and give this video/dvd a try, you'll be glad you did.Your posture will improve, your stomach be toned, and you'll just plain feel better as a human being!!! :D

Pilates for Beginners Review

Pilates for BeginnersThis workout features two ten-minute routines and two twenty-minute workouts. I would say the moves range from very basic (step-by-step instruction, might feel a little slow for someone with a little experience but it still keeps you moving) to basic (moves aren't performed quite as slow) to advanced beginner (adequate instruction but much less broken down; exercise becomes progressively more challenging).

Throughout the video, Kristin shows you how to "cheat" by holding the backs of your thighs or bending your knees for some of the moves then she may ask you to do one last challenge and try full versions of the exercise. She also gives you a break between most exercises but it's in the form a stretch so you don't feel like you're wasting time.

All workouts start in a seated position, so for those who aren't quite flexible or brand spanking new to Pilates, you might want to do a little warm-up to get those muscles limber before you get started.

Workouts (in order on DVD):

Core Warm-up (10 Minutes--Very Basic):Seated "100," "100" (with a breakdown of how to the exercise then an actual performance of the exercise), roll-up, spine stretch, saw, twist

Core Connection (10 Minutes--Basic):Single toe taps, double toe taps, arm circles, "the bug",single leg plie bends (right side), leg circles (right side), repeat last of the two exercises on the left, bridge, bridge with leg extensions, double leg plie bends

Foundation Work (20 Minutes--Basic to Advanced Beginner):Single leg stretch, double leg stretch, single leg straight leg stretch, double leg straight leg stretch, criss cross (a.k.a. bicycle crunches), "rolling like a ball", tick-tock, hip thrusts(these are pretty hard), double leg circles, "open leg rocker", back kicks, "Ballerina Butt Lift", heel beats, neck pull, half neck pull, half neck pull with a twist, "shaving", single leg teaser, full teaser

Strong Backside:(20 Minutes--Basic to Advanced Beginner):Leg circles, leg lifts, kicks, bicycles, taps, inner thigh leg circles, inner thigh leg lifts, the clam, mermaid stretch, spinal twist, hip stretch, Can-Can (4 variations), repeat of leg series through hip stretch), "Little Piece of Heaven" (a child's pose/push up combo), back lifts, "swimming", an arm/leg stretch in a tabletop position

Bonus Features:A Pilates Workout Tips Booklet with Bonus Moves cards (moves are different from what are on the DVD, meant to be used as in addition to this DVD), Pilates Tutorial (about 5 minutes--shows how to achieve a neutral pelvis and Pilates "V" both in the standing and seated positions; she uses the "100" as an sample exercise), 10 minute segment from Exhale: Core Fusion Pilates Plus (Thighs & Glutes), a 5 minute segment from Weight Loss Pilates (the first 5 minutes of Flow 1), and a biography of Kristin McGee

What I liked:

1.There is plenty of variety with these workouts, virtually no repeats from one workout segment to the next.

2.The upper body is not neglected so you get a total body workout ("shaving" is a new fav of mine for the triceps).

3.Kristin is very personable and gives good instruction.

4.The work outs are customizable (think the 10-Min Solutions DVDs)

5.Some pretty cool extras!!

What I didn't like:

1.I would have liked there to be an actual warm-up for these workouts.

2.Some of the moves that require you lift yourself up (i.e. the hip thrusts and double leg circle) might prove a bit too hard for a beginner.

But all in all,a pretty solid workout.

Discovering Pilates Review

Discovering PilatesWhile this is a solid instructional DVD, the instruction gets old once you can perform the techniques on your own.You end up doing extra repetitions or just stretching while the teachers explain the movements yet again. For something you can work out to on a regular basis, the fast-moving "Classical Pilates Technique" (mat workout) is a better choice.Either that or you could search for a DVD that has an instructional track and a workout-only track.
